A consortium of different Civil Society Organizations working to contribute in addressing the prevalence of sexual harassment in tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria, the Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy Cluster, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently assent to the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill, 2023.
The coalition said assent to the bill will promote confidence and all-round well-being in tertiary educational institutions across Nigeria.
The group made the appeal in a communique issued on Friday after a strategic engagement with heads of tertiary institutions held in Abuja.
‘’The aim of the meeting was to discuss the effort of the participants in addressing sexual harassment in their respective institutions, and to leverage collaboration to solicit assent of the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill, 2023 by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,’’ the communique read in part.
The consortium said despite efforts made by institutions across the country, the rate of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria is still worrisomely high.
It identified some of the contributing factors to include the absence of a uniform law that directly addresses sexual harassment, professional chauvinism characterized by prejudiced support for one’s own group and fear of persecution after reporting.
According to the communique, the heads of tertiary institutions and relevant stakeholders at the meeting expressed commitment to establishing an Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee at their various institutions and supporting the establishment of Campaign Against Sexual Harassment (CASH) clubs in their respective institutions.
Among institutions at the meeting are Federal College of Education (Tech), Akoka, Federal Cooperative College, Kaduna, Federal College of Agric. Prod Tech, Kano, Federal Polytechnic Kabo, Kano State, Federal College of Education (Tech) Gombe, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria., University of Lagos, Akoka and Akwa Ibom State University
Others are Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osuro, Centre for Gender Studies, Veritas University, Federal Polytechnic Ukana, Akwa Ibom State and Gombe State University
