Following a social media report by a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM), alleging discriminatory treatment at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has closed down the KFC outlet at the airport.
In a statement issued by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, on Thursday, it was mentioned that this action was taken in accordance with the Lagos State Law on People with Special Needs. The statement further instructed the management of KFC to apologize to the affected PRM and to display a policy statement against discrimination at their facility's entrance before resuming operations.
The statement read: "FAAN has closed the KFC facility at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, effective from March 28, 2024, based on a social media report by a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM) alleging discriminatory treatment. An investigative team led by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, MD/CE of FAAN, has confirmed the incident, leading to the closure of the KFC outlet where the incident occurred."
Earlier, Debola Daniel, son of former Ogun State governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, had shared his experience of discrimination at the KFC outlet in MMIA, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. He recounted being denied entry due to his wheelchair and emphasized the need for inclusive treatment of disabled customers.
